(1/3) I’m standing on top of an epic piece of technology that was just launched into the pacific after 5 years of hard work (see story!), started by a 19 year old kid: @boyanslat. It is a tiny part of a massive system built by @theoceancleanup which will help remove over 50% of plastic from the great Pacific garbage patch in the next five years. It’s autonomous, solar powered, complete with anti-collision systems, cameras, sensors and satellites. (2/3) Here’s how @theoceancleanup works. The massive plastic tubes behind me float on the surface of the water, while a skirt (not a net!) floats beneath the tubes to catch all the plastics so that they don’t escape. The tubes naturally float with the wind and currents to the places with the highest density of plastics and collect them all in one place so a boat can swoop in and pick it all up. It’s marvelously simple and works (hopefully) completely automatically!! #theoceancleanup #behindtheimpact #impactstories

(3/3) Once @theoceancleanup tubes have all the plastics concentrated, a cleanup boat can swoop by and pick everything up so that it can be recycled and made into more durable products! @boyanslat has accomplished something tremendous – designed a technology to fight ocean plastics – but he’s going to need our help to win.
